Is It Maltese or Hairpin Lace?
Hairpin Lace Crochet
Is it Maltese or Hairpin Lace, well the answer will depend on what country you are from. There are many laces and the name may also depend on what year you were born.
There are many stitches used when creating Hairpin Lace pieces each creates a variety of designs. Like all other types of crochet, hairpin lace starts with the chain stitch. The yarn is then wrapped around the prongs of what looks like a folk, the traditional hook is used to crochet the middle of the loops and for connecting the strips of lace.
Forks used for Hairpin Lace forks come in different sizes, choose the size best suited for the yarn or thread used.
Remember the width of the folk determines the width of the strip. Hairpin Lace uses includes doilies, wearable, edgings for home decor and lingerie.
Did you know that Chas Riley invented the adjustable Hairpin Lace fork, which comes in handy, rather than purchasing a different size folk for each project?
Believe it or not, we are experiencing a revival of needlework arts such as Hairpin Lace, combined with crochet, is in vogue once again. You in store for some fascinating patterns which can be made from cotton, silk or wool yarn or thread.
For example by using fine or heavier cotton thread to make Maltese lace for centerpieces, handkerchief edgings, and scarfs.
The finer silk may be used to make veils while the thicker silks make great handbags and wool make beautiful shawls, scarfs and baby caps to name a few.

This booklet is on Archive.org – it would save you a ton of bandwidth to just give the people the link! But I did enjoy looking at it on here, thank you. I just bought a hairpin lace tool, I have been crocheting for years, and I thought I could just learn it in a few seconds- lol! I felt stupid because it seemed to take me so long. But, once I did it, it was too easy. Takes you one “sitting down & figuring it out” to get it in your brain for good.

Thank you for your comment yes I do use Archive.org but I’m not sure if I saw this title. I am glad that you enjoyed the website I am working to make it a one-stop resource for vintage needlework.
Please stop by again soon.
