This is not MALTESE. These are hairpin crochet lace patterns. US MALTESE, we do the MALTESE BOBBIN LACE which is worked very differently and does not use a crochet. Sadly not many of us still work it and the craft whilst not loosing its popularity and value, is getting lost at its foundation as it is tricky to learn and today’s generations do not have the time and willingness to learn the technique.

Pauline, thank you for your comment. Maltese and hairpin lace are the same, but the name may depend on the country and year of birth. Hairpin lace is also known as Maltese or Portuguese crochet. Please be sure to expand your knowledge. Most stitches used in various techniques have never been practiced here simply because they were not quick and easy, and American women did not want to take the time to learn them. A great example is crochet using international crochet symbols rather than the narrative forms of instruction we here in America are accustomed to. I’m so glad that my blog is a place of learning and exploration in the arts of vintage handicrafts.

Been looking for Vintage patterns of all types of needle works. Especially tatting, crocheting, knitting. Since I my collection of my Mom’s and her Grand Mom’s. They were back to 1920’s up till the 1970’s. I know some may not be available.
