1970s Crochet Bikini & Lacy Medallion Beach Coat Patterns PDF – Sizes 8–14
1970s Crochet Bikini Beach Coat Pattern PDF – Two Vintage Designs
This 1970s crochet bikini beach coat pattern set includes two original designs. Make an openwork bikini and a long-sleeved beach coat with joined lace medallions.
The archival photographs show the actual garments included in the instructions. Together, these pieces capture the expressive resort style of the 1970s.
Two Vintage Crochet Patterns Included
Openwork crochet bikini: Make a triangle-cup bra with a narrow neck strap and matching bottoms. Directions begin with vintage size 8, with changes for sizes 10 and 12. The original pattern uses shaped sections, scalloped openwork, elastic, and a small button.
Lacy medallion beach coat: Create an airy, open-front layer from joined circular motifs. The design has sleeves, a shaped neckline, and ribbon ties. It fits vintage sizes 10–14 and uses two strands of crochet cotton held together.
Original Materials and Gauge
Bikini yarn: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 (5, 6) balls.
Bikini hook and notions: Milward steel hook No. 1/0, ½ yard of ¼-inch elastic, and one small button for the bra.
Bikini gauge: Six double crochets equal one inch. Four double-crochet rounds equal 1½ inches. For the openwork, four scallops equal three inches and six rows equal two inches.
Beach coat yarn: American Thread Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton, 16 balls of 250 yards each.
Beach coat hook and notions: Dritz No. 0 steel hook and two yards of 1-inch grosgrain ribbon. Each motif measures 2¾ inches across when made with a double strand.
Modern Maker’s Note
Choose crochet cotton carefully. Historical thread brands and steel hook numbers may not match modern products. First, compare fiber, twist, yardage, and thread thickness. Then make a swatch in the original stitches before buying the full quantity.
Measure the beach coat motifs. The original instructions use two strands of crochet cotton held together. Work a complete motif and check its 2¾-inch diameter. A small change in motif size can affect the coat’s finished measurements and drape. Keep tension consistent when joining the circles. Finally, weave in ends securely and block the lace gently.
Test the bikini fabric. Openwork crochet may gain weight or stretch when wet. Therefore, wash a sample, check recovery, and assess opacity before deciding how to wear the set. The vintage directions do not establish modern swimwear support, lining, or performance. Consider suitable lining and secure finishing if needed.
Finish both designs as directed. For the bikini, follow the original shaping, elastic, and button instructions. For the coat, preserve the neckline, joined motifs, and grosgrain ribbon ties. These details help maintain the silhouette shown in the archival photograph.
Modern color combinations. Re-create the period look with coral-red bikini cotton and an ivory lace coat. Alternatively, try terracotta with sand, cobalt with white, or espresso with warm cream. A contrasting ribbon can connect the coat to your chosen swimwear.
How to Wear It Today
For resort dressing, layer the medallion coat over suitable modern swimwear. Its openwork makes it a distinctive beach or poolside cover-up.
Alternatively, wear it over a tonal slip dress or wide-leg linen trousers. This gives the vintage lace a fresh look beyond the beach.
