Today, here’s my step-by-step guide for Tunisian (Afghan) crochet with images to help you understand the process:

Materials Needed

• Tunisian crochet hook (also called an Afghan hook)
• Yarn of your choice

Let’s start with a Foundation Chain

1. Make a Slip Knot:

   Place a slip knot on your hook.

1. Chain Stitches:

   Chain the desired number of stitches. This will be the foundation chain for your Tunisian crochet.

Before we proceed, the image below shows a row of chain stitches with a crochet hook in the last chain.

2: Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch (TSS)

1. Forward Pass – Insert Hook: Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

 The hook is inserted into the back of the second chain using the hook.

1. Yarn Over and Pull Through: Yarn over and pull through the stitch, leaving the loop on the hook. Repeat this across the row. You should have as many loops on your hook as the number of chains you made.

 You’ll see multiple loops on the hook after pulling through each chain as you progress to the end.

1. Backward Pass – Yarn Over and Pull Through One: Yarn over and pull through the first loop on the hook.

1. Yarn Over and Pull Through Two: Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat this process across the row until only one loop remains on your hook. This completes one row of Tunisian Simple Stitch.

3: Repeat the Process

1. Next Row Forward Pass: For the next row, insert your hook under the vertical bar (the front post) of the stitch below, yarn over, and pull through. Keep the loop on your hook.

1. Continue Your Tunisian Stitches Across the Row: Repeat across the row.

1. Tunisian Backward Pass: Repeat the backward pass as described in Step 2.

Let’s complete the Backward pass with a yarn over and pulling through loops during the backward pass.

4: Continue Working Rows

1. Continue Working Rows: Continue repeating the forward and backward passes until your project reaches the desired length.

5: Tunisian Stitch Binding Off

1. Final Row Forward Pass: Work the final row as a regular forward pass.

1. Slip Stitch Bind Off: Insert your hook under the next vertical bar, yarn over, and pull through both loops on the hook (a slip stitch). Repeat this across the row to create a neat edge.

6: Fastening Off

1. Next, cut Yarn and Fasten Off: Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and pull it through the last loop on the hook to fasten it off.
2. Weave in Ends: Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends securely.
