Original Folklore Jackets and Vests Pattern Photographs
Explore four original archival photographs from the patterns included in this PDF. They show the Peruvian mother-and-daughter knitted vests, the Aztec knitted vest, the crocheted peasant jacket, and the knitted Snowflake Vest. The photographs illustrate the actual vintage designs, not modern recreations.

The PDF cover identifies a bust range of 32–40 inches. However, each project has its own instructions and may not share the same sizes. Check the individual measurements before choosing a pattern. The mother-and-daughter photograph shows the original Peruvian vest design.
Original Materials
The collection uses several vintage yarn lines, including Columbia-Minerva Nantuk 4-Ply, Nantuk Sweater, The Performer, Amy, Glimmer Fluff, Wool 4-Ply Worsted, Nantuk Ombre, Nantuk Denim, and Covona. Amounts, needle or hook sizes, and gauges vary by design. Therefore, follow the materials list and gauge for the individual pattern rather than using one yarn specification for all five.
Modern Maker’s Note
Yarn substitution: Many named yarns are historical. First, compare the original fiber, yarn thickness, yardage, and intended texture with current options. A modern yarn carrying the same weight label may behave differently, especially in patterned knits or firm crochet fabrics.
Gauge and fit: Make a generous sample in the actual pattern stitch or colorwork technique, then wash or block it as appropriate for the yarn. Compare the resulting gauge with the original directions. Because vintage sizing differs from today’s sizing, check each project’s measurements and allow for suitable ease. For mother-and-daughter pieces, verify the adult and child directions separately.
Colorwork and finishing: Choose yarns with compatible weight and stretch for contrasting stripes, motifs, or embroidered details. Keep floats and joins neat where applicable. In addition, plan for edges, ties, closures, seams, and any shaping specified in the original instructions. Avoid replacing structured yarn with very soft or heavy yarn without testing how it changes the garment.
Modern palettes: Try paprika, cobalt, and goldenrod for vibrant folk-inspired color; forest green, cream, and rust for a quieter heritage look; or charcoal, ivory, and burgundy for tailored layering. The mother-and-daughter vests can share a palette while using different accent colors.
How to Wear These Designs Today
Layer a patterned vest over a crisp shirt or fine turtleneck. Meanwhile, a textured jacket works well with denim, corduroy, or a plain midi skirt. The matching adult-and-child designs also offer a memorable handmade gift project.
