Lesson Two Crochet Tutorial

Crochet Tutorial Lesson Two picks up where Lesson 1 stopped, this article includes lots of new stitches and free vintage patterns too.

Now that you’ve had time to practice the stitches and make up some of the easy free patterns from Lesson One, it’s time for some more interesting crochet techniques with Crochet Lesson Two. We have lots of new stitches to learn and free vintage patterns too!

Now that you’ve learned the basic steps you can begin working on the infinite number of patterns, like the traditional Granny Square Motifs. Remember that motifs have lots of advantages such as the ability to carry around your project. Motifs can be worked separately and then joined together to make anything from a tablecloth to exquisite wearable art.

Once you have learned the techniques of the double and treble stitches shown, you will find yourself able to create a whole array of lovely pieces.

These stitches, so easy to master and so quick to crochet, you will love them. Almost effortlessly there is satisfaction, as you see your work grow rapidly row by row.

the unusual belt shown in this article is just one way of using crocheted rounds. With this method you can make a variety of things, from place mats to handbags to shawls, or even lacy wearables. And, of course, any on of these items will make a great gift.

Variations of the Double Stitch

1. Short double (sdc) or half double (hdc)

Make the required length of chain.

1st row. Skip first 2ch, *yoh, insert hook into ch, yoh, draw through one stitch (3 loops on hook), yoh, draw through all loops on hook (1 loop on hook), (this makes 1 sdc), repeat from * to end of ch. Turn.

2nd row, 2ch, * 1 sdc into sdc, rep from * to last sdc, 1 sdc into 2nd of 2 turning ch. Turn. Rep 2nd row for length required.

2. Treble stitch (tr)

To begin, first work the required length of chain.

1st row. Skip first 4ch, * yarn twice over hook-called y20h–insert hook into next ch, yoh, draw loop through ch, yoh, draw loop through first 2 loops on hook, yoh, draw loop through next two loops on hook, yoh draw loop through last 2 loops on hook, (this makes 1 tr), rep from * to end of ch. turn.

2nd row. Work 4ch. work 1 tr into next tr, rep from * to end of row, working last tr into 4th ch of turning ch. Turn. Rep 2nd row for length required.

Double treble (dtr)

Work these stitches in the same way as treble, passing the yarn over hook three times, instead of twice. then work the loops off the same way, two at a time, until one loop remains on hook.

Here’s a video example and how from Plant Purl on YouTube.

Here’s a bonus stitch and one well worth adding to your list of stitches, it’s called the Half treble crochet stitch (htc), here’s another video tutorial from Crochet Hooks You.

4. Double crochet around double

This stitch is often used in designs where a deeply ridged effect is required. Make the ridge by working around the double in the previous row, instead of working into the chain at the top of the stitches.

Shown below is a sample a double already worked, with the hook in place to work the next stitch around the double in the previous row. The ridge is made by the top chain on the previous row being left free on the reverse side of the work.

The last stitch today is the Double Crochet between Double

As you can see this is confusing it looks just like the previous stitch. To crochet with the stitches alternating more definitely, work into the space between the doubles in the previous row.

The illustration shows ordinary double with the hook in place to work the next double into the space in the previous row.

The last two stitches show how you can change the appearance of a familiar stitch by varying the way you insert the hook, take a look at this video.
