Although crochet is simple, it provides marvelous crisp textures and color effects, which makes it ideal for heavy or unusual pieces. Fringed shawls, ponchos, dresses, bags, and even suits made from crochet patterns are so very easy to do and, in turn, do so much to liven up one’s wardrobe.

If you knit, you will probably notice that anything that you crochet tends to use more yarn than a design that is knitted. However, because crochet rows are deeper than knitted rows, you will be able to finish the work in a much shorter time, whether it’s a Man’s tie, an elegant evening dress or a cozy afghan.

Common Abbreviations | Complicated abbreviations will be explained as we get to them

crochet abbreviations

It should be noted that YOH is the first movement in crochet and forms an important part of every stitch.

An asterisk * means to repeat directions following the * as many extra times specified.

Repeat instructions in parenthesis as many times as specified.

For example: (5ch, dc into next dc) 5 times, means to make all that inside the parentheses 5 times.

Multiple means the number of stitched necessary to complete one pattern stitch. If the pattern is 4 sts, the number of chains should be evening divisible by 4. If the pattern reads “multiple of 4 sts plus 1” then an extra chain stitch is required in addition to the multiple of 4.

How to Start

The beginning of crochet is to make a slip stitch in the yarn or thread and place it on the hook.

1. To Make a Slip Loop – Wrap yarn/thread around first and second fingers on left hand. Insert hook under front loop and draw the back loo loop through to form a new loop, slipping of off your fingers and transferring it to the hook. Pull the loop tight.

How to Crochet Singles and Doubles

To begin crocheting, make a chain and then work back along that chain with your chosen stitch. The top edge of this row forms a new chain base for the next row. Remember to pick up the top two loops of the chain formed by the previous row, unless otherwise instructed. this creates an even surface.
